Sumba Photo Stories – Kabar dari timur

January 16, 2021

Fair Future – Kawan Baik Indonesia | January 12, 2021 / Gogon, Vifick, Elisa, Alex and all children from East Sumba

Online virtual exhibition until 20.03.2021. What is the most urgent, the biggest problem? You just have to ask them. Thanks for this photo project, the children explained to us through their pictures, the difficulties of their daily lives. Another approach to defining needs, explain socio-cultural conditions. Projects created by children for their environment! We have to watch and listen.

This exhibition is a glimpse of life in the east, life in rural East Sumba. A representation of the daily life of families in remote areas, captured from the eyes of young students aged 9 to 12 years.
They opened the house for us, shared regular meals with us, invited us to follow them on the way to school, see their islands and hills from morning to night. They capture the moments that mark their lives and explain them to us. Creating stories from these images is also an important part of this exhibition and the curation process. Not only do they open the door, but they also want to explain and tell stories to guide the visuals, in their own words. Now it’s up to us to listen.

From the corners of Kahaungu Eti subdistrict in the eastern part of East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tanggara, their villages are named Kamanggih and Matawai Katingga. Forty-eight children are writers and artists from this exhibition titled “News From the East”. Through these photos, viewers in Indonesia and around the world can imagine and immerse themselves in the daily lives of children in the region.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the cancellation of socio-cultural events and the cessation of teaching and learning activities in Indonesia, the exhibition must be adjusted. Therefore, it is adapted online, making it accessible to a larger audience through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

This media is expected to transpose messages from this series of photos and stories as close to reality as possible.

Sumba Photo Stories is a program initiated by Kawan Baik Indonesia and Fair Future Foundations. Gather factual information from the subjective point of view of the perpetrators, in this case 48 students, using photographic media and create stories from it.

In their environment and through these social, cultural and educational programs, actors offer a real perspective on their quality of life, based on their authentic insights. The exhibition “News from the East” features children as protagonists. Still, the program adapts to a diverse target population: Women as leaders, specific areas of work or communities or other themes.

The main objectives of the program are to learn new skills, such as photography and storytelling, improve writing for children and adults, and increase confidence in either speaking or presenting the work that has been done to the audience.

The resulting work, photography, is a work of its own. They also become factual basis analyzed for research work in the fields of socio-cultural, educational or health.

The exhibition will run until March 2020, through its website sumbaphotostories.com
